Easy Whoopie Pies....or Healthier Homemade HoHos!

Easy Whoopie Pies (recipe adapted from Epicurious)

I've always wanted to make these! And I thought the Super Bowl gave me a great excuse to try them. My girls loved them so much they thought they were just like HoHo cakes.

Just be warned: it's very hard to stop at one!

For cakes

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup well-shaken buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 large egg

For filling

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/4 cups confectioners sugar
2 cups marshmallow cream such as Marshmallow Fluff
1 teaspoon vanilla

Make cakes:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a bowl until combined. Stir together buttermilk and vanilla in a small bowl.

Beat together butter and brown sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes in a standing mixer or 5 minutes with a handheld, then add egg, beating until combined well. Reduce speed to low and alternately mix in flour mixture and buttermilk in batches, beginning and ending with flour, scraping down side of bowl occasionally, and mixing until smooth.

Spoon 1/4-cup mounds of batter about 2 inches apart onto 2 buttered large baking sheets. Bake in upper and lower thirds of oven, switching position of sheets halfway through baking, until tops are puffed and cakes spring back when touched, 11 to 13 minutes. Transfer with a metal spatula to a rack to cool completely.

Make filling:
Beat together butter, confectioners sugar, marshmallow, and vanilla in a bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until smooth, about 3 minutes.

Assemble pies:
Spread a rounded tablespoon filling on flat sides of half of cakes and top with remaining cakes.

Stromboli is quite simply the perfect combination of all of my favorite foods.... pizza, crust, bread, tomato sauce, cheese and tasty meats! It's like a giant, savory Twinky but the filling is a pizza.

(Emeril Lagasse) Dough Recipe Ingredients:

1 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F)
1 (1/4-ounce) envelope active dry yeast
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
Yellow cornmeal, for sprinkling the baking sheet

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the water, yeast, honey, and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, stirring to combine. Let sit until the mixture is foamy, about 5 minutes.

Add 1 1/2 cups of the flour and the salt, mixing by hand until it is all incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Continue adding the flour, 1/4 cup at a time, working the dough after each addition, until the dough is smooth but still slightly sticky. You might not need all of the flour. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth but still slightly tacky, 3 to 5 minutes.
Oil a large mixing bowl with remaining olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat with the oil. Cover with plastic wrap and set in a warm place, free from drafts until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.

Now roll it out as a large rectangle on an oiled board. Spread tomato/ pizza sauce, sprinkle with cheese and sausage. Roll it up and pinch the ends and seams shut. I cut three vents in the top to let out the steam as it cooks.

Pop it in the oven at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes. It needs to cook low and slow to get through all of those delicious layers.

If you like a more finished look, add an egg wash to the breading before baking. Also, go creative with the fillings.... veggies, spinach, salami, turkey, hamburger, Parmesan cheese, leftovers.

Organizing My Life

Every January, I completely tear apart my studio. I unpack all of my fabrics, needles, threads, bobbins, ribbons, trims and paints. I place them in piles throughout my family room and start from scratch.
I had originally intended to take a picture of the mayhem, but I thankfully I forgot... how embarrassing! After over two full days of cleaning and wading through huge piles of supplies, here are a couple of my creative de-cluttering ideas to share:

Ribbons and threads have now been moved right next to my work area so I can be more efficient.

One of my favorite ideas... I took a unused wire basket, mounted it on the wall and threaded my ribbon spools on dowels. Now the ribbon is organized and in full sight so I can monitor when I am running low of a color.

My favorite new toy... a labeler. Everything got a sticky label on it.

My smaller ribbon spools tend to get lost while I'm working. These baskets are tipped sideways for storage and for me to see them better, but they can be easily moved to my work table or sewing machine.

Chicken wire stretched on an empty frame makes a great way to hold little bottles of paint and loose brushes. (taken at Bachmans Idea House)

My ribbon flowers are now individually jarred according to color. My die cut felt shapes are similarly organized.

Repurposing...

I love the idea of reusing something, creatively for an entirely new purpose. This patina'd, punched metal basket make a great use of space in a bathroom or kitchen near a sink. Turned on its side it offers 'built in' shelves and a darling towel rack for a hand towel. Pop in some extra guest towels, stylish soaps and lotions and you get a great look that's interesting to look at yet functional!

New Year, New Venture...The Tutu Barre

One of my favorite hobbies is 'the hunt' for new (or vintage) unique trims, buttons, ribbons and what-nots. I've decided to venture into the supply side of things in tandem with Whimsy Wendy and Pretend Play.

Red Pom Trim (sold in 2 yard increments) would look darling on the edging of a purse or skirt.

This vintage 1 3/8" black velvet ribbon would look great on the hem of jeans or the cuffs of a sweater.

I found this gorgeous trim in a sari shop in India. It's the last of my stash!

Little Touches Make A Big Impact

Believe it or not, this little girls room is full of little touches from ready made things that make a really, fun and colorful impact.
These LED lights are decorated with colorful paper cups in contrasting colors and patterns. Hung over a bed near the headboard, they are hung willy-nilly with painted and embellished bird houses.

Embroidery hoops with sewn or glued fringe and cute peace stickers are hung over the bed headboard.

Just a touch of whimsy.... one colorful stuffy with colorful pillows pop on the bed.

An inverted wire basket makes a darling light treatment with tassels hung with care.

An added touch on a painted board behind a work desk...multi-layered muffin papers cut with petals and a cloth covered or painted thumb tack created a beautiful, one of a kind flower.

Something simple... a can cozy put on a jar or container for the pens.

I'm always looking for ways to display art in my daughters room. Here jump ropes and clothespin create a create art wall.

Spell Your Spirit!

What a great way to shout your love of the holidays, than spelling out your festive spirit with craft store letters embellished with paint, fabric or beads. Don't just hang them up, but frame them in empty frames and hang them in a hallway, spelling out your favorite holiday sayings: Noel, Joy, Feliz Navidad, Merry, Love.

This is also another great idea for a child's room. Spell out their names in colorful letters and frame them over their bed or dresser.

This time of year, while decorating my home for Christmas, I really get the bug to re-do, re-decorate , and re-paint. I love pouring over decorating magainzes. Here's another posting from a visit I made to the Bachman's Idea House in Minneapolis. I found a number of great creative ideas including these ideas for a boys room!

This light fixture is made from a traffic cone, drilled with a bit to make the textured holes, then adhered to the ceiling.

How about the tread from a tire cut to make a window valance?

Magnetic paint, painted in vertical stripes on the wall make a great landing strips and hours of play time.

Adorable Soap Truffles

Here's another simple yet beautiful gift to give to your friends and family around the holidays.... beautifully packaged Soap Truffles.

Fragrant Soap Truffles ready to be boxed up

First grate similar soap colors together. My husband travels to some beautiful hotels for work. I always ask him to bring back all of the spa soaps that are in his hotel room. They are usually extra moisturizing and fragrant!

Rolled oats - perfect to roll your truffles in to add a little texture and use add an exfoliate.

To make these little treasures, simply grate your soap in piles of similar colors. I used the large and small grater sides on my veggie grater. Put a very small amount of warm water in a large bowl (you can always add more but you can't take the water out once you start!) and add the grated soap to it.

At this stage, if your soaps are non-fragrant you can add an essential oil to the mixture. You can also add oatmeal or another texturizing exfoliant at this time. A little seems to go a long way... start sparingly.

From there, simply form the truffles the size you'd like them to be. I wanted them to look like darling little treats in the paper muffin liners. When they were still damp, I rolled them in a little extra oatmeal so it would stick.

Soap Truffles rolled in exfoliating oatmeal.

They look good enough to eat!!

Christmas Cashew Crunch

Tis the season to indulge. After visiting Warrens, Wisconsin on a girls' weekend trip I discovered an Amish treat... Cashew Crunch. When home, I decided to try to make some for myself, and I honestly think I nailed the recipe!

Christmas Cashew Crunch

1 cup unsalted butter

1 1/4 cups white sugar

1/4 t. salt

1 T. light corn syrup

10 ounces cashews

Generously butter/ grease a large baking sheet or pan; set aside

Combine butter, sugar, salt and corn syrup in saucepan over medium heat. After butter has melted, add cashews and heat on high. Heat to 302 degrees (on candy thermometer), stirring occasionally so your nuts don't burn.

Pour onto greased pan and allow to cool for about 10 minutes. Break into pieces and store in airtight container lined with waxed paper.

Try not to eat it all at once! I dare you.

My Oatmeal Kick... Fast

Every time autumn rolls around, I get this craving for real oatmeal. I'm not talking about mushy, quick cooking oats that come in the round box with the funny looking man on it. I mean REAL oats - steel cut oats. They look like this... (McCann's is a favorite) hard little cut pellets that take a solid 45 minutes to cook.

Now, I've discovered a faster way to cook the good stuff. The night before I want oatmeal, I simply measure out 6 cups of water and set it to boil. I add 1 1/2 cups of steel cut oats to the boiling water and let it roll for one minute. Now turn off the heat and leave it overnight covered on your stove top. The next morning, the oats will have absorbed most of the water and only need to be heated up for 10 minutes to a nice chewy consistency.

For a little added nourishment we add raw cranberries for those last 10 minutes.

Apple Time

Every fall, I bring home a bag or two of apples and experiment with all sorts of new apple recipes. Here's my new one:

Super Easy Apple Galette (Rustic Apple Pie)
1 uncooked home-made or pre-made pie crust
2 small or 1 large thinly sliced apple
1/4 cup sugar
Pat of unsalted butter
egg wash (beaten egg with a little water added)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out pie crust on baking sheet. Toss sliced apples with sugar and spread in the middle of pie crust, leaving 2"-3" on the edge to fold. Fold loose crust over the apples on the edges. Egg wash the crust and sprinkle with little sugar. Dot apples with unsalted butter.
Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and apples have cooked down.

I can't believe it's been three weeks since I've posted... Life has been a little more upside-down than usual, spending time in my work room really helps me think things through. There is something very theraputic about working with your hands. It's calming. There's a purpose and an end result!
Today is catch up day featuring new reversible crowns in pink and brown, bedecked princess hats with gorgeous rosette blooms and new Party Puffs that were just sent out with a custom order. The puffs feature one of my favorite color palettes: pinks, grey and whites. Stunning!

Baked Blueberry Oatmeal

I woke up this morning with a crazy desire to have a crisp fall morning. It's not like we've had a wonderful, hot and delicious summer. But this week the girls and I did our school shopping, prepped their wardrobes and now, are eagerly waiting to find out who their teachers will be. It's one of those mornings I really wish we were in 'sweater weather'.

So, with that in mind, I whipped up my favorite Baked Oatmeal Recipe, through in some blueberries and am sitting down relishing each bite as I write:

Baked Blueberry Oatmeal

3 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 t. cinnamon
2 t. baking powder
2 cups milk
1/2 cup melted butter (I usually use a little less)
1 t. vanilla
1 cup + blueberries

Mix together the ingredients in a 9 x 13 baking pan. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. If you can stand it, let cool a little to set.

Sweet and Salty

I ran away for a little bit; but had to come home. I ran away to very necessary sunshine and warmth. This winter seems endless although I'm sensing a turn in the tide. I've always wanted to take pictures of my girls in the water or beach with one of my skirts on and I finally did it! Here's a smattering of some of my favorites...

Change of Pace...

Every so often, I go through a period when I need to step away from the sewing machine (temporarily of course!) and flex my skills at something else. After reading a quicky murder mystery called The Double Knit Murders, I was itching to do a little knitting again.

Grandma Doris taught me the basics when I was younger and as I've gotten older, I've spent a little time trying to perfect my stitches. I found a great knitting pattern kit a few years ago called the Knit Knack Kit (Barnes and Nobel) . The li'l critter hat pattern is a favorite.... a quick pattern, but when your stitches are pretty and even... it is sooooo cute!

Here are my newborn and 3mos hats. I topped them off with some off-white yarn poms to add a little something extra. Very pleased.

To duplicate, cast on 24, 28 or 34 stitches, leaving a 6 inch tail to weave in later. Do the stockinette stitch until the piece is long enough to be folded in half to make a cap. Stitch up your sides, leaving the rolled edges at the bottom and weave in the loose ends.

Next I'll try adding some stripes!

Bird Mobile

I have always been in love with mobiles... hanging art that displays a purpose of balance. Recently I saw a hand-crafted mobile made from an old embroidery hoop as a base. It game me a great place to start.

I used loads of my ribbon scraps to load up the 10" hoop base, but first I wrapped it in gauzy tulle so the two hoop pieces were now one.

I created the birds from fabric scraps, beads and buttons...

Attached the birds to ribbon strips...

Overall, my first attempt will certainly cheer up any corner, but I think I'll try another one using three dimensional birds or hearts. It looks darling in my office, but my daughters are arguing over who gets it for their room. I guess that's a good sign♥

Is there anything sweeter than a newborn sweetly sleeping in tutu? A common problem for newborn photographers is getting that little thing into her props. After hearing from a photographer about a fussy session, I came up with this idea:

Wrap the waist in a satin waistband.

Attach the satin ribbon trim and silk flower to embellish.

Attach Velcro at both ends of the waist band to easily dress and remove skirt from sleepy baby.

My Monster Valentine

Gone are the days of the Valentine shoe boxes with a few pictures on the sides adhered with canned paste, simply wrapped in brown paper grocery bags with a hole cut into the top. Last year, I sent my youngest daughter to her new school with the 'traditional' brown box only to discover an unspoken and secretive contest had been posted for the most creative and ingenious of Valentine boxes. To shame!

So, this year, not to be outdone by fourth grade counter-parts, I scoured the Internet and library for unique box designs. (They say copying is the best form of flattery). And I must say, using a little inspiration and a little more competitiveness... we scorched it this year. Behold, the Monster Box:

This size seven shoe box was simply wrapped in brown poly-fur and hot-glued to its surface. The layered eyes were cut from scraps of felt and hot glued as well. His teeth, of beige felt, were sewn on the sewing machine for a little stability and hot glued onto the inside of his mouth. And voila!

This creature will collect even the sweetest of valentines without a fuss. He just grabs it between his fuzzy teeth.

Just wait until next year!

A Small Act of Thoughtfulness

Being that it is a very special day, this entry is dedicated to my darling Grandma Doris who really got my creative juices going when I was just a tadpole. She was always knitting, cooking, crocheting doilies, baking, sewing barbie clothes, kneading, or embroidering kitchen towels. I really do attribute my love of working with my hands to her. She was a gentle, kind and very loving grandmother.

Grandma loved bridge and often played with her friends, hosting simple gatherings at her home. I was fortunate enough, a few years ago, to come across a small collection of some of Grandma's homemade bridge cards.

Looking for some ideas for a thank you the other day, I took a closer look at these gems.

My favorite theme, which she used quite often, was the peasant girl. Using scraps from her sewing box, she'd carefully shape out a bonnet and dress and glue them to the card. Using crochet flowers or drawn free-hand, a small bouquet was added. Sometimes she'd add a bit of lace to give her a petticoat. My favorite were the shoes and grass...always drawn from markers or pencils she'd have on hand.

I love thinking of her sitting down at her dining table, taking the time to make these sweet cards for each of her friends.

This next batch I grouped together demonstrates her flair for detail. The mice are a favorite; made from a simple thumbprint. The yellow flower is actually a small collection of shells layered in a circle to create the petals. The card at the bottom left of this picture is little glued balls of embroidery thread and leaves sewn into the card.

What a treasure to have been a friend that could take these home! With that thought in mind, I came up with my own present day version to give as a gift to a friend.

I started with some beautiful blank cards from Crane & Co. Using my sewing machine, I sewed a simple triangle for her dress onto the card. I stitched a little ric-rac to embellish. I hot glued a simple felt bonnet on her head. At the bottom of my notions box, I found two simple, die-cut tulips to glue on. I continued by free-handing the simple stem and leaves, a little lace on her bonnet and finished by putting her shoes on.

I think she'd say I cut a few corners, but Grandma Doris would have been pleased it was used to think of someone else.

My Schmaltz-y Valentine

I wanted to feel the Valentine Spirit in my studio so... I found a very inexpensive styro-foam heart form at Jo-Ann Fabrics. I tied loads of 12" vibrant red tulle strips around it, and followed up with a clean 'hair-cut' to create this very schmaltz-y heart. I made sure all of my knots were directed the same way to keep it looking neat and tight. I hot-glued some pretty silk ranunculus flowers and voila! To spice it up a little, I was thinking next time, I'd add some patterned ribbons or extra small flowers, dotted through-out.

What!? No Homemade Valentines???

I'm in shock...despondent... in mourning... For first the first time in her ten years, my youngest has asked me not to make homemade Valentines for her class party.

Every year, I scour the Internet and library for cute and unique "homemade" valentine notes and treats. We've done heart shaped mice with Hershey kisses for their nose, heart flowers with lollipops in the center, thumbprint hearts on Kit-Kat butterfly wings... the list goes on.

So, in an effort to ease her obvious discomfort with my Valentine's Day obsession, I gave in.

So now, as I glare at the burgeoning pile of crispy chocolate hearts and stale smelling, pre-printed note cards, I fight the urge to hide them until next Tuesday. Would she forgive me or would this scar her for life? Would she forever turn her back on home-made goodness?

Using the Wilton Heart Cookie pan and an easy spreading frosting. They hold up very well on the stick, yet aren't too crunchy. They have a great texture. My only complaint is they are a little sweet, but isn't that what Valentines Day is all about?

I lost my little shadow this last week. Norman was almost 16 and has been at my side almost every minute of every day. How strange and difficult to sit at my sewing machine and see an empty bed next to me. I found this poem written by an anonymous author that really expresses the 'noise' in our house right now.

Recently I came across the book: One-Yard Wonders: 101 Sewing Fabric Projects; Look How Much You Can Make with Just One Yard of Fabric!

I have gobs of fabric that I collect and was looking for a creative and useful way to use it. I found this darling pattern for a French Market Bag. Trimmed in simple bias tape, it features french seams inside for a 'seamless' and clean tote that folds into a small bundle, easily stuffed into your purse. The wide straps offer a lot of strength and are perfect for that quick trip to the grocery store, or ballet class.

I found this marigold, Parisian print online years ago. The white bias tape offers a clean edge and the fabric ribbon sewn into the bottom of the bag, allows it to be bundled up tidily.

I love the wide, comfy straps!

Things To Make with Scraps

I'm always looking for ways to use my scraps...especially if I'm crazy about the fabric. I have a horrible time throwing them away.

Here's a simple solution: fabric party bags.

Simply cut out a 8"x 11" of spare fabric with pinking shears. Fold in half and sew up one long and one short end with a 1/4" to 1/2" seam allowance. Stuff with party goodies, candy and stickers. Cut out a fabric ribbon to coordinate or use left over ribbon scraps to top off and add a little flair.

These might make good jewelry bags too!

New Year, New House, New Studio

It's been a while since I've been on, but for good reason. Right before Christmas my family and I moved. We'll be unpacking for a while, but we made it!

My studio, right after we moved in, December 13th.

Chaos....wasn't sure where everything was going to go! Too much stuff.

The day after we moved, a major snow storm went through the Twin Cities...

It took me until yesterday to finally feel completely organized and 100% up and running. It's a little white for my 'creative space' but gives me loads of potential. And although it doesn't have the same light that I had in our last home, you can't beat the view.

How long can I keep this up? Forget losing weight! Maybe staying organized should be my New Year's resolution.

A Whimsy Wendy original design! I'm so excited to share with you my new Christmas ornament just in time for the holidays this year!

First I found some pretty black, sturdy wire that was strong but flexible. I created a pattern in which to bend the hangers into shape using nails pounded into a boards. I think they are darling!

Using felt, ribbon and tulle, I fashioned the ballet dresses to mini-size. The felt bodices have each been decorated individually. It almost looks as though my studio is a mini dressing room.

Trying to get all the colors right, I'll focus on purples and pinks. I was even thinking an elegant one with ecru colored tulle and black bodice.

Halloween at the Miller House

Lately our lives have been in a whirl-wind (whose isn't?) but one thing is always for certain... Halloween on our street is a sure thing. I wasn't going to let this year go by without a whopper of a party. We had two bonfires on the driveway, a bar in the garage and served the cold food outdoors under a tent. Heated food was indoors. I'm guessing we had a couple hundred people stop by and warm up by the fire!

One of my friends just had a new baby boy!!! I wanted to think of something new other than the standard dressed up cloth diapers, so I came up with an oil cloth changing pad with a soft terry cloth play pad on the reverse. The oil cloth is super easy to keep clean with just a swipe of a wet wipe.

The black and white polka dotted fabric makes the contrasting lime green pop. I trimmed the edge with a soft bias tape and made a coordinating diaper. Cute but practical!

I finally came up with a design for wings that I love! Durable and flexible, these felt wings give me a lot of options for design styles, colors and shapes. They are made with two layers of felt with a layer of stabilizer sandwiched in between. There is a metal rod, sewn into a sleeve at the top of the wings to help keep their shape and soft satin covered elastic to slip around the shoulders and keep them in place. I'm excited about the possibilities!

Here's my happy client story...At Strawberry Festival, I had a returning customer make a point to come up to me and let me know a story about a Whimsy Wendy tutu she had bought a few years ago... After passing the tutu down through her two daughters, she passed it on to a friend living in Copenhagen with her family. I had a chance to help out with an auction for my girls' school this past Spring and wanted to come up with something special from Whimsy Wendy to donate. I had more fun putting this costume box together for the silent auction. I found the toy box at a local re-sale shop and painted it with castles, checkers and harlequins.... but inside...

Strawberry Festival 2010

It's hard to believe Strawberry Fest has already come and gone for this year. The girls and I had such a wonderful time heading back to visit our friends. And THANK YOU to everyone that stopped by the booth and spent time selling, visiting and catching up! It wouldn't be the same without you. I think the only downer on this trip was the small, albeit heavy thunderstorm that passed through the festival on Sunday morning (see attached, very wet photos)

There are just some moments living in the Midwest that you wouldn't change a thing. It's been a long winter already, but this last weekend was a perfect example of why we still live in this climate. Saturday morning, we woke up to hoar frost on each branch and needle. With the sunlight coming up, it was stunning.

Prepping for the School Bake Sale

A bake sale for the Middle and Lower schools tomorrow...I can't help it. I just can't back plain cookies anymore. Cutest website I've seen in a long time got me started on these delectable cake pops. www.bakerella.com has the neatest ideas, recipes and beautiful photos. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, this is a great place to start.

I had to try a couple attempts at these morsels. I tried making them way to big at first, then had to cut them into thirds. Freezing them with their sticks in really helped too.

I used a Devils Food Cake mix, cream cheese frosting and candy melts. They are so versatile because you could decorate them for any occasion... just change up the sprinkles, candy melt colors, ribbons, etc.

I stuck them in round Styrofoam semi-circles, covered and decorated with tissue paper and ribbon, added a recipe card for allergy information and that's it. Next time, I know the girls are going to want to help me! It's really messy.

I can't believe how difficult it is to get on this thing once a day, let alone, once a week, to talk a little bit about what I'm doing! This January has been packed full of TAXES! All of my sales taxes are due for Minnesota and Wisconsin and I finally filed them today! UGGGHHH - It is pure torture for someone who would rather work with her paints than play with numbers.
One productive thing I did this month was begin another website from scratch. I was turned onto Wix.com by my 12 year old and how cool! The free sites are easy to set up and design. Pumpkin Pancakes

Can you smell that baking pumpkin pie? My house smells like bubbling cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Alright, I wasn't that motivated, but I did have a hankering for pumpkin pancakes this morning. I found a lot of recipes online, but I tweaked one for a very subtle, pumpkin-y flavor; great for the very finicky.

Pumpkin Pancakes

2 Cups Flour

3 T. brown sugar

1 t. white sugar

1 t. cinnamon

1/2 t. cloves

1/2 t. ginger

1/2 t. nutmeg

2 t. baking powder

1 t. baking soda

1 1/2 cup milk

1 egg

2 T. oil

2 T. vinegar

Blend dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately. Mix together until just combined. Batter will be very thick. Scoop into prepared griddle. Flip when brown. They get thick and fluffy, so make sure they are thoroughly cooked through when taking them out of the pan! (Obviously I don't care about perfect circles. I go for the organic shape).

I have to be honest. I am a fabric junkie. I collect bits and pieces. Once, about a year ago, I actually paid a fair amount of money for a PIECE of a kimono (Japanese robe). I collect Asian prints, leathers, fleece, felt, cottons and silks. I just can't stop. Last year, I remember a check out lady at Mill End Outlet (Eden Prairie) asking me what I was going to do with this beautiful mirrored, two-toned acetate. I was embarrassed to tell her, "I have no idea. I just need it".

Well, in keeping with my effort to create without purchasing, I found a great way to use my cotton, stabilizer and felt fabrics.

How about this bracelet for little ones?

First I started with a two-sided strip of cotton ( about 10" x 1 1/2 "), ironed on stabilizer (stabilizer is always key - I hate using wimpy fabric for kids), then satin stitched the edges. On the opposite sides of both ends, I ironed (and stitched) on small squares of Velcro. For the flower, I just fooled around with my left-over felt scraps and put together this collection of fabrics and shapes, capped off with a button for the center of the flower. It's stitched to the wristband (then hot glued a little for added stability). My favorite thing about this is the possibilities are endless. You could create a fabric watch, super hero wristbands, or using more Velcro, add interchangeable fabric objects.
